How Locals Actually Eat in Ocho Rios

Here's something most travel guides won't tell you. Locals don't eat at Miss T's every Friday — that's a special occasion restaurant. For everyday meals, we hit up Island Grill, KFC, Father Bull, Scotchies, or the nearest jerk pan or cook shop.

Local cook shops line the streets of Ocho Rios town — you'll always see the taxi men grabbing a quick lunch to go. The food is real, the portions are big, and the prices are low.

James Avenue might seem a little sketchy at first, but it's filled with local charm. It's a busy one-lane street packed with tons of local businesses — the street made popular by Jamaican music producer Jack Radicks. There's a local spice shop, barbers, and all sorts of little stores. My favourite cook shop is right next to Boswell Hardware — I love their soup. The portion sizes are huge.

For special occasions — birthdays, anniversaries, celebrations — locals will go to places like Miss T's, Evita's, or Christopher's at Hermosa Cove.

If you don't feel comfortable walking around, be mindful wherever you go and always follow your gut instincts. But don't let fear keep you from experiencing the real Jamaica — the best food is often at the smallest spots.
