Explore Jamaica's underground world โ stalactites, an underground lake & centuries of hidden history
Green Grotto Caves is one of Jamaica's most fascinating natural attractions โ a massive limestone cave system on the north coast between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, near Discovery Bay. Named for the green algae that covers its walls, the caves stretch over 1,500 metres and reach depths of 12 metres, featuring dramatic stalactites, stalagmites, numerous chambers, light holes, and a stunning underground lake known as the Grotto Lake.
But what makes Green Grotto truly special is its history. These caves have sheltered Jamaica's original Taino inhabitants, hidden Spanish settlers fleeing the English invasion in 1655, concealed runaway enslaved people seeking freedom, and served as a base for arms smugglers running weapons to Cuba. During World War II, the Jamaican government stored rum inside the cave entrance. More recently, the caves were even used as a nightclub โ and served as a filming location for the James Bond movie Live and Let Die (1973).
All visits are guided โ you can't explore the caves independently. Tours depart regularly and last about 45-60 minutes. Your guide will lead you through a maze of chambers, pointing out rock formations, explaining the geological history, and sharing stories of the caves' remarkable past. The guides are known for being engaging, knowledgeable, and humorous.
The highlight for most visitors is the Grotto Lake โ a crystal-clear underground lake deep within the cave, illuminated by atmospheric lighting. The turquoise water surrounded by ancient rock formations creates an otherworldly scene. It's one of the most photographed spots in Jamaica's natural attractions.
Before and after your cave tour, explore the well-maintained grounds featuring tropical gardens, informational signs about local plants and trees, a gift shop with Jamaican crafts, and a snack bar. Clean restrooms are available. The waiting area is shaded and pleasant.
